The History of SSDI

Anderson, Greenville, Spartanburg, South Carolina

South Carolina SSDI law office paralegalAt the Dick James Law Firm in Greenville, South Carolina, we understand the difficulties that arise when you become disabled or retire and no longer have the same income you once did to pay your bills. SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance) was created so retired and disabled citizens that have paid into Social Security during their working lives would have an income source if they are no longer able to work.

How it Began

The United States Social Security program in its original form was created to provide pensions to Civil War veterans. At first, the pension benefits were only given to Union veterans who had been injured in combat and had become disabled. Later, the benefits were given to all Union soldiers.

During the 1930s, at the time of the Great Depression, President Roosevelt began promoting his idea of "social insurance". This was the beginning of the Social Security system of today.

Roosevelt organized a group known as the Committee on Economic Safety. This group developed provisions to allow workers to start retirement accounts that could be contributed to on a regular basis. In 1935 this plan became the Social Security Act, also known as the SSA Law.

In 1956, provisions for disability were written into that law. Today's disabled workers are entitled to this disability income to replace the income they lost as a result of their impairment.

SSDI Today

Today, restrictions have been placed on the eligibility of disabled persons applying for SSDI. Some of these restrictions include:

  • If you engage in "substantially gainful activity", you may not qualify to receive SSDI benefits.
  • The disability you are filing for must be considered either terminal or expected to last a minimum of 12 months.

At the Dick James Law Firm, we help disabled residents of the Anderson, Spartanburg and Greenville, South Carolina areas obtain the SSDI benefits they are entitled to. Please contact our SSDI attorneys today so that we can fight the unfair denials and red tape that are preventing you from receiving the benefits you deserve and have contributed to during your entire working life.
