Amputations Defined

Amputations involve the removal of all or part of an extremity (leg, arm). This may be the result of a traumatic injury stemming from an automobile accident or motorcycle accident, or it may be the result of a necessary surgical procedure.

For surgical purposes, an amputation may be performed to control pain or to remove an extremity that has been partially severed or irreparably damaged during a traumatic event. It may also be performed as a preventative measure to control such disease processes as diabetic infections, gangrene, or malignant forms of cancer affecting tissues and bones.

Traumatic amputations occur when the severing of a limb has resulted from a sudden, traumatic accident. In these cases, the limb is often too damaged to repair and reattach.

Types of Amputations

The type of amputation performed by your surgeon will depend on your individual needs and medical condition. An accidental amputation may also be classified as one of the following:

  • Shoulder disarticulation and fore quarter amputation
  • Arm
  • Above-elbow
  • Elbow disarticulation
  • Forearm
  • Wrist
  • Finger
  • Hip disarticulation
  • Hemipelvectomy
  • Leg
  • Above-knee
  • Below-knee
  • Knee bearing
  • Ankle disarticulation
  • Van-Ness rotation (foot reposition and reattach to create a knee)
  • Partial foot
  • Foot
  • Toe

Recovery from Amputation

Any type of amputation is detrimental to the victim's physical and mental state. It is also difficult for the family of the victim. The surgical, healing and recovery processes are all extremely traumatic and require time and understanding for all involved to adjust and recover. Financial hardships may also affect the victim and the family during the recovery process and for this reason it is important to obtain legal counsel as soon as possible.
