Broken Bones

Greenville, Spartanburg, South Carolina

At the Greenville, South Carolina workers compensation lawyers at the Dick James Law Firm, we understand how difficult things can be when you have suffered a workplace injury. Dealing with Workers' Compensation issues can often be stressful and frustrating. Your main concern should be healing properly, not how you are going to pay for medical expenses and put food on the table until you can return to work at full capacity.

Many people experienced their first visit to the orthopedic surgeon when they were young and being taken to the emergency room for their first broken bone. The weeks of healing didn't matter much because you got to proudly wear your cast and have everyone sign it.

Unfortunately, as we grow older, broken bones take more time to heal and the injury site never seems quite the same as it was before the break. In our adult lives, we also have to struggle to function and perform our normal daily tasks with the clumsy inconvenience of a cast that gets in the way of everything.

How Bones Break

A broken bone may also be called a fracture. They really are the same thing and they are the most common reason for visits to an orthopedic surgeon. When a bone is unable to support the amount of pressure placed on it, it breaks. The two factors that cause a fracture are the amount of force and the strength of the bone.

Treating a Broken Bone

Bones are constantly changing throughout our lives. The cells that make up our bones are absorbed by our bodies and are replaced by new cells. Because of this natural process, a broken bone heals naturally.

How a specific broken bone will be treated depends on the following factors:

  • The location of the fracture
  • The severity of the separation at the broken ends
  • Age and activity level of the patient
  • The potential for healing
  • Other injuries that have been sustained

When treating a broken bone, the doctor wants to make sure that the broken ends of the bone are aligned properly to promote proper healing. This is referred to as reduction. If the ends of the bone have been seriously separated, surgery may be required to perform the reduction. In this case, pins, rods, screws or plates may be used to complete the task. Once the bone has been manipulated into proper alignment, it is placed into a cast.

If you have suffered a broken bone on-the-job, it is in your best interests to consult an attorney who is experienced in helping clients who have been injured at work.
