Hand Injury

Greenville, Spartanburg, South Carolina

Our workplace injury attorneys at the Dick James Law Firm in Greenville, South Carolina know the laws regarding Workers' Compensation and personal injury. We will work hard and draw from our resources to ensure that you receive all of the benefits you are entitled to if you have suffered a hand injury on-the-job.

Work related tasks such as repetitive motions can cause injuries due to overuse and wear and tear on the hands. Without discontinuing the use of the injured hand through immobilization and applying ice to the affected area, often the injury becomes more severe and much more painful.

Types of Hand Injuries

An acute injury to the hand can be the result of a direct blow, a penetrating object or maneuvering it in abnormal directions. Bruising and swelling often occur as a result of the injury. Some possible types of acute hand injuries include:

  • Bruises
  • Torn ligaments or tendons
  • Sprains
  • Strains
  • Fractures
  • Dislocations

Overuse injuries can also occur when too much stress is placed on the joints or tissues. Common overuse injuries include:

  • Tendonitis
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • De Quervain's disease

Treating Hand Injuries

Most treatments for hand injuries include employing the RICE technique (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation). Another method, "buddy-taping", involves taping the injured finger and the one next to it together so that there is extra support.

Some other treatments may include the application of a brace, splint or cast depending on the location, severity and type of injury. When the injury took place may also be a factor in determining the most effective treatment.

Hand Injury Prevention

The best way to avoid sustaining an injury to the hands at work is to practice good preventative techniques. Aside from doing exercises that will strengthen your hand and arm muscles, you may also want to try some of these other methods:

  • Take a break from activities that trigger the symptoms
  • Reduce the force and speed of repetitive movements
  • When grasping an object, use your whole hand instead of just the thumb and index finger
  • Wear gloves that have vibration-absorbing padding and support the wrist
  • When holding objects for a length of time, change positions frequently
  • Use proper holding and safety techniques for hand and power tools
  • Be aware of your body mechanics and work posture
  • Arrange your work in order to maintain good posture while changing positions
  • When typing, use proper forearm, wrist and hand alignment with the keyboard

Following these preventative tips may reduce the chances of injuring your hands, but the possibility still exists. If you do sustain a hand injury on the job, report your injury immediately and seek medical attention.
