Reglan Black Box Warning

Anderson, Spartanburg, and Greenville, South Carolina

Reglan (generic metoclopramide), a medication prescribed to treat gastrointestinal disorders, has just been ordered the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) to carry a black box warning due to reports that the drug has been linked to Tardive Dyskinesia (TD), a condition that produces involuntary and repetitive movements of the body even after the drug has been stopped.

If you or someone you know has taken Reglan for more than twelve weeks, you may develop TD symptoms including:

  • Involuntary movements of the arms and legs
  • Involuntary head movements
  • Involuntary facial movements
  • Involuntary lip movements
  • Involuntary blinking of the eyes
  • Involuntary movements of the tongue

The development of TD is directly related to how long the drug was taken; the elderly (especially women), children, and those taking the drug for a long time are at the greatest risk of developing TD. The symptoms of TD are irreversible, and there is currently no treatment for TD.

Metoclopramide-containing drugs work by speeding up the movement of the muscles of the stomach increasing the speed at which the stomach empties its contents into the intestines. Reglan is indicated for short-term use (no longer than three months) and is used for patients who have not responded to other treatments. However, the FDA reports that approximately 20% of Reglan users took the drug for longer than the recommended three months.

The following is a list of the drugs involved in the black box warning:

  • Reglan tabs
  • Reglan Oral Disintegrating Tabs
  • Metoclopramide Oral Solution
  • Reglan Injection

An estimated 2 million Americans have taken Reglan.

A black box warning (also called a boxed warning or a black label warning) is the most serious type of warning a drug can receive. It gets its name from the black border that surrounds the text of the warning and is reserved for drugs that carry significant risks of serious or life-threatening adverse effects.

If you or someone you love has taken Reglan and has since become ill, please contact the South Carolina defective drug attorneys at The James Law Firm today to schedule your confidential, no-cost consultation.
