What is a Spinal Cord Injury?

When there has been an injury to the spinal cord, the motor and sensory signals to the brain have been interrupted. This happens when the fiber tracts in the spinal cord have been damaged. Spinal Cord Injury Classifications

The severity of a spinal cord injury is classified by sense of touch, pinprick sensations and neurologic levels when the victim is tested. The ability to move and the strength of the muscles are also determining factors when establishing the extent of injury the spinal cord has sustained. The American Spinal Injury Association has developed different levels of classification for determining the extent of injuries that do not result in complete paralysis or death.

The leading cause of death following a spinal cord injury is often pneumonia or another type of respiratory condition. Heart disease, septicemia and subsequent trauma can also arise as additional complications.
