Traumatic Brain Injury Questions

Anderson, Greenville, Spartanburg, South Carolina

The following are some commonly asked questions about Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs). If you have questions that are not answered below, consult a traumatic brain injury attorney for additional information.

What is a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)?

A Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is defined as a blow or trauma to your head, or when an object penetrates your head and disrupts your brain’s function. Every jolt to your head will not result in a TBI, however these brain injuries can range from "mild," (such as a brief loss in consciousness) to "severe," (such as an extended period of unconsciousness or amnesia following your injury. A TBI can create temporary or permanent problems, and may or may not inhibit your ability to function independently.

How much trauma can the brain undergo?

This depends on many factors. For a young victim who experiences a first-time injury where there is not a great amount of tissue and brain stem damage, and no loss of oxygen to the brain, there is a remarkable ability to recover. However, bleeding in the brain stem, significant blood loss and oxygen loss can mean permanent, devastating outcomes. For someone with a previous head injury, even a small bump can mean major damage.

What are the symptoms of a TBI?

Symptoms can differ for mild and severe TBIs, and can include:

  • Headaches (from mild and sporadic to severe and persistent)
  • Difficulty thinking, concentrating and/or remembering
  • Fatigue
  • Irritability
  • Anxiety
  • Blurred or double vision
  • Sensitivity to bright lights

What is the recovery process like?

If you have suffered a brain injury, the quickest part of your recovery often takes place within the first six months following your injury. With mild cases, you may return to your pre-accident state within three months. More severe cases will take longer; you may never return to the same pre-accident state. However, with time, assistance and patience with a modified lifestyle, many TBI victims find they can lead a fulfilling life.

What kinds of jobs are well-suited for those who have suffered a TBI?

Because the effects of TBI vary considerably, there are no jobs in which a person is “disqualified” because of a brain injury. Those who have suffered a TBI have found successful careers in various settings, such as Veterans’ services, healthcare facilities, and rehabilitation centers. The following are some characteristics to look for when seeking an occupation if you have a TBI:

  • Regular, daily schedules
  • Access to memory aids (such as voice recorders and task checklists)
  • Routine tasks
  • A minimal amount of distracting noise and light
  • Sufficient breaks
